Jeff Merkley is seeking a fourth Senate term in a state all three major forecasters rate Solid D, Cook, Sabato, and Inside Elections showing no daylight between them. A late-June 2026 poll put Merkley ahead by 5.4 points, a margin that, on its own, understates the structural comfort of this race. The more consequential question Oregon raises is what Merkley does with a safe seat. He has spent three terms as one of the Senate's most persistent critics of Wall Street consolidation and Big Tech market power, a role he shares across the aisle with figures like Josh Hawley, which is itself an illustration of how antitrust has broken out of its traditional partisan box. Merkley co-authored the 2021 American Innovation and Choice Online Act and has consistently opposed bank mergers that federal regulators approved with little public scrutiny. Oregon's own economy gives that record material weight: the state is home to both Nike's global supply-chain dominance and a timber industry whose consolidation into a handful of large investment-management landlords has reshaped rural communities east of the Cascades. Portland-area turbulence over drug decriminalization's rollout and chronic street homelessness has made Democratic incumbency in Oregon less automatic than it once appeared at the state legislative level. Merkley's margin, while healthy, reflects a senator whose personal brand runs ahead of his party's local standing. His fourth term, if it arrives, lands him in a Senate where antitrust coalitions are unstable and institutional patience for structural reform is short.
